The brief

The use of the two-stroke engine is wide spread due to its low weight and compactness, it is however classified as a “dirty engine” with high hydro carbon emissions. The pre burn cat system lowers these emissions to a barely measurable level. The challenge Tikka Race Sweden wants to tackle with you is: To explore possible new applications for the existing technology as well as understanding the need from different customer segments and markets.

The background

Some years ago, the creator of the pre burn cat system was very bothered by the smell of his snowmobile and decided to improve the two-stroke engine. The use of the two-stroke engine is wide spread due to its low weight and compactness, for example in boats, lawnmowers, chainsaws, generators and snow blowers. It has the disadvantage however that it is classified as a “dirty engine”. The main reason for this is Hydro Carbons (HC), which comes from unburned fuel. For example, using a lawn mower fuelled with regular 95 octane gasoline for an hour releases an equal amount of harmful substances as a car during 300 hours of idling! The pre burn cat system is a self-adjusting cleaner with no moving parts. It has been tested on a two-stroke snowmobile engine by Svensk Maskinprovning which found that without the system installed the emissions ranged between 5500-8500 ppm HC at mixed driving and with the system installed 0-105 ppm HC in the same conditions. The system has competed in the Clean Snowmobile Challenge and finished as the cleanest two-stroke snowmobile in the world with barely measurable emissions. As a bonus, the system can also be used in several four-stroke engines.

The problem

The challenge Tikka Race Sweden wants to tackle with you is: As efficient as the system is, it has not yet found its core market. The company wants to explore possible new applications for the existing technology as well as understanding the need from different customer segments and markets.
